Behind the Scenes: Breathing New Life into "Autumn Leaves" with Lofi Vibes

There is something timeless about "Autumn Leaves." Whether it’s the melancholic melody or the way it perfectly captures the changing of seasons, it has always been a staple in my repertoire. But for my latest single, I wanted to take this jazz standard out of the smoky club and into the world of Lofi and Chillhop.

The Vision: Organic meets Electronic

My goal was to blend the raw, organic soul of the tenor saxophone with the gritty, dusty textures of Lofi production. I wanted the listener to feel like they are sitting in a cozy room, watching the rain fall, while a vintage record spins in the corner.

The Creative Process

Recording this version was a deep dive into experimentation:

  • The Foundation: I started by building a custom Drum Rack in Ableton Live, focusing on "crunchy" snares and a kick that feels felt-covered and warm.

  • The Harmony: Using my Harley Benton Nashville Nylon, I layered soft, jazz-influenced chords. The nylon strings provide a natural "woody" tone that sits perfectly under the lo-fi aesthetic.

  • The Star of the Show: For the saxophone, I used my Rode NT2-A condenser mic. I focused on a breathy, intimate performance—almost like a whisper in your ear. To get that "empastat" (glued) sound, I used sidechain compression triggered by the kick, making the sax "dance" with the beat.

A Personal Challenge

This project was more than just a cover; it was a personal challenge in my home studio. From mastering the Boss RC-600 loops to fine-tuning the saturation in Ableton, every step has been a huge learning curve. Transitioning from a live performer to a producer/multi-instrumentalist is a journey of constant discovery.
